WSA’s Favourite Festive Adverts for 2021

Whether you love the festive season or not, many of us anticipate what creative, funny and heart-warming adverts brands will come up with at this time of year. That’s why I’ve asked members of staff to share their favourite Christmas advert for 2021…

Aldi – Ebanana Scrooge

Our Paid Digital Media Manager, Laura Farnsworth was head over heels for a highly anticipated advert this year. She says “The Aldi advert, 100% is my favourite!! Ebanana Scrooge, how genius is that?! I’ve even bought one from Aldi”

Tesco – This Christmas, Nothing’s Stopping Us

The Tesco advert was a hit for our Business Development Manager, Stephanie Rodgers. “Tesco won for me this year! My favourite parts are the Mum bribing the Elf to see Santa (that totes me) and the travel ban stop starting the aeroplane. It is very relatable in my opinion.”

Prime Video – An Unlikely Friendship

Our Head of PR and Marketing, Joe Cuffaro took a particular liking to Prime Video’s Christmas ad. “Amazon Prime Video worked with European agency CYW, Blur Films and The Mill to give us Hattie the Hyena in 2021, a unique take on the now common ‘animal-buddy’ Christmas advert. There’s plenty of familiar tropes, from a melancholy cover of a classic song (Nat King Cole’s Smile by Joy Crookes) to overarching themes of fun and companionship. What makes this effort standout is how it ties into the brands wider ‘Every Smile Tells a Story’ Campaign, taking an animal that is typically portrayed as villainous, teasing conformity to this momentarily, but then ultimately delivering a positive dose of anthropomorphism. In a world where polarizing opinions continue to cause social divisions, Amazon Prime Video remind us that scary stereotypes of others are often misunderstood and that we can all connect over enjoying having a good laugh together.”

Celebrations – The Lonely Bounty

The celebrations advert warmed the heart of fellow bounty lover, Projects and Events Director, Vicki Chastney. “Celebrations ad gets my vote, I love a Bounty and they deserve happiness!”

Coca Cola – Real Magic

The infamous Coca Cola advert has won it year on year for our Digital Operations Manager, Tom Sarson. “It has to be the Coke advert. It’s not really Christmas until I have seen that on TV. The classics are always the best.”

McDonald’s – Imaginary Iggy

Finally, my own favourite! Imaginary Iggy won my heart this year. What’s not to love about Iggy? A friendly fluffy pet was every child’s dream and the relationship she has with Iggy throughout the years reflects how many feel about a childhood teddy in my opinion – hide it as much as you like, but we all love comfort! Also, the subtle advertising of the ‘Reindeer Treats’ was very clever!
